The great thing about spring is getting out of your heavy winter layers and into some clothing you haven’t worn in a while. But with the season change, comes that urge to shop and the desire to add a few pieces to your wardrobe. Here are six ways to save when you head out to the stores.
Did you know people spend less when they shop using cash as opposed to a credit/debit card? A study at New York University found that people would consistently spend more with a card, even a debit card, than they would using cash. By budgeting a certain amount of cash and having only that when you shop, you’ll be less tempted to overspend. Leave the card at home!
Hit the discounters
Shopping at discount stores like TJ Maxx, Gordman’s or Ross is a great way to build a wardrobe of quality pieces at heavily discounted prices, but there’s a secret to shopping at some of the discounters: You have to find out when they restock. I had a friend who was frustrated at never finding anything at TJ Maxx. Turns out, she was only going on the days right before they restocked new merchandise. Everything had been picked over by then!
Build a core of neutrals
As Stacy London says, “All neutrals go together.” You’ll be able to stretch your wardrobe into more outfits if you have plenty of neutral pieces. Having neutrals is one of the secrets of French women, who always look so chic yet have tiny wardrobes compared to Americans. I like focusing on neutral pants or skirts and then having a variety of shirts to pair with with them.
Check for deals online
There are a number of websites keeping track of coupons and sales. Be sure to check one before you start shopping because savings can be huge. You can get a variety of coupon codes for your fashion needs. There are also websites with occasional free items that you can check out.
Focus on fit or DIY
If you take a look at some of the most popular style blogs, you’ll notice they all have one thing in common; perfect fit. Alterations can be expensive, so either learn to do your own alterations or make sure you never leave the store with something that ‘almost’ fits. There are tons of online tutorials for hemming pants and slimming tops.
Update with accessories.
Your discount Michael Kors watches or gorgeous Pandora jewelry will upgrade your basics into a more stylish look. Accessories are the quickest and easiest way to have big impact for your money! You can get a new necklace or bracelet for relatively inexpensive and an old look can become modernized.
If you want to look stylish without breaking the bank, these steps are sure to help you stay within your budget while preparing your wardrobe for Summer 2013.
